The Story of the Naja

GaryThe Moors first introduced this amulet called “The Hands of Fatima” to Spain when they invaded Spain. The Spaniards used it as a protection symbol and also protected humans from the “evil eye.” When brought to America, the Native American Navajo used the symbol as the centerpiece of their “Squash Blossom” necklaces.

Artist and Goldsmith, Gary McVean received his MFA in painting and film making from the University of Oklahoma in 1971.

Since that time, Gary has been designing jewelry almost exclusively and has been established in Durango, Colorado for the past twelve years.

The original design of the Naja featured throughout this site reflects the spontaneity of Gary’s art.

Accented with precious stones, set in gold and silver, each Naja is designed with a distinctive character all its own.
