Our Story:

Gary McVean first came to Durango when he was 12 years old to ride the Durango to Silverton  Narrow Gauge Railroad with his brother. After that fateful train ride, both boys swore that they’d return one day when they had grown up, AND THEY DID!

Gary first started making jewelry in 1971 after earning his MFA from the University of Oklahoma. Since then, he’s spent nearly every waking hour either painting or making jewelry. Everything Gary produces is unique in its design, handmade and never mass-produced.

In 1988, Gary opened Lanka Blue Jewelry on Durango’s Main Avenue with his wife, Betsy. They have sold and show-cased Gary’s incredible designs as well as those of prominent Four Corners Native American artists and other local artists. All the jewelry at Lanka Blue is made from sterling silver, 14 karat gold, or 18 karat gold. Their jewelry also features an incredible variety of genuine turquoise as well as precious gemstones such as amethysts, diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires and much more.

Lanka Blue Jewelry has stood the test of time as a Durango staple and must-see location for anyone visiting the area. If you’re the kind of person looking to take home a handmade one-of-a-kind piece of this beautiful mountain town, Lanka Blue Jewelry is the right stop for you.
