The Story of the Naja

GaryThe Moors first introduced this amulet called “The Hands of Fatima” to Spain when they invaded Spain. Naja is the original name for the amulet used by the Spaniards as a protection symbol. and also protected humans from the “evil eye.” They placed the Naja on the foreheads of their horses during battle. When brought to America, the Navajo Nation adopted the symbol and the “Squash Blossom” necklace was  born.

Traditionally, the necklaces were made by the grandmothers of the tribe.  Each “squash” was used to represent one of the grandchildren. Ultimately, they  were made for ceremonial purposes and worn by the men.

Artist and Goldsmith, Gary McVean received his MFA in painting and film making from the University of Oklahoma in 1971. Since that time, he has been designing jewelry almost exclusively. Gary McVean has owned a store in Durango Colorado for 33 years at 701 Main Avenue.

The original design of the Naja featured throughout this site reflects the spontaneity of Gary’s art. Accented with precious stones, set in gold and silver, each Naja is designed with a distinctive character all its own.
